Having a "Sweet" Time in Kindergarten!

Over the past couple of days we have been very busy in the Kindergarten classroom. On Thursday it was Picture Day. We have been working on our Rosh Hashanah crafts throughout the week as well. Coordinating with the holiday of Rosh Hashanah we have been learning about apples too. I think we have a few children whom are very interested in going apple picking! Today, Friday, we celebrated Aidan Landers' birthday in the class. Aidan brought cookies for us all and is the Abba for Shabbat too. We had learning centers today during our Fabulous Friday celebration. The children alphabetized pictures, painted, and worked together on math activities. It was a lot of fun. Next week is a very unusual week. We have a 1/2 day of school on Monday, and no school Tuesday or Wednesday. Remember to come to the Family Rosh Hashanah Service on Wednesday as well where our children will be blowing their shofars.

Today at Center Time

Today in class it was Fabulous Friday! The children participated in four centers. In one center they used stamps to stamp out their first and last names. In another center they played phonics games. At the third center they spelled short a words with magnets. And at the fourth center they painted with watercolors.

A Very Important Day

Today in class there was some discussion on why today is an important day in our country. Some of the children told us that they talked to their parents about what happened on September 11th, 2001. I didn't want to cross any lines as to what was appropriate to talk about in the classroom, so I let the kids lead the discussion. They told each other the basics...mostly about how two towers collapsed and bad people flew planes into buildings.
One thing I did want to tell them about was that there is something being built in New York City to replace the buildings that fell. I was able to show them a video on the computer of the new construction at the site. It was very cool!

Also on the computer I was able to show the children videos of the disappearance of the bees. We looked at bee hives that are being found empty, crops that are dying, and beekeepers that are losing their bees. The videos we watched were very interested and informative. Look for videos on YouTube that show what is happening to the bees!

Blowing the Shofar

The Kindergarteners are learning how to blow the shofar the correct way so they can blow it at the Rosh Hashanah family service if they attend. We are practicing everyday on our very own small shofars.

Making Great Friends

It seems as though the kids are becoming great friends. We cannot wait for more good times together!
